For those who fancy a festive Big Mac over a traditional turkey dinner, the question of whether McDonald's will be open this Christmas is a pressing one. The fast-food giant has revealed its plans for the 2025 holiday period, with opening times set to vary significantly across its vast UK estate.
Christmas Day Opening: The Exception, Not The Rule
With more than 1,400 branches nationwide, the vast majority of which are operated by franchisees, opening hours are largely decided at a local level. This means there is no single rule for the entire country. However, McDonald's has confirmed that it is highly likely your local restaurant will be closed on Christmas Day.
A spokesperson explained that only a very small handful of restaurants are expected to open their doors on December 25th. These are typically branches situated near major transport hubs, such as busy roads or motorway service stations, catering to essential travellers.
How To Check Your Local Maccies' Festive Hours
The company strongly advises customers to use the official McDonald's restaurant locator tool online. By entering your postcode, you can get the most accurate, up-to-date information for your nearest branch. The website states: "Only a handful of McDonald's restaurants open on Christmas Day, please refer to the restaurant locator to confirm if your local restaurant is open during the Christmas period and what times they are trading."
For other key dates, most restaurants will operate on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, albeit often with reduced hours. For instance, the Brighton London Road branch will close at 8pm on Christmas Eve instead of its usual 11:45pm. Meanwhile, the 24-hour Newcastle Northumberland Street restaurant will shut at 10pm on Christmas Eve and reopen at 9am on Boxing Day.
Festive Feasting: The Grinch-Themed Christmas Menu
The holiday news coincides with the launch of McDonald's highly anticipated Christmas menu for 2025, which this year features a playful Grinch theme. New items include Grinch McShaker Fries with dill pickle seasoning and a special Grinch Meal that comes with a main item, fries, a drink, and a pair of Grinch socks.
Other festive treats joining the lineup are a Frozen Grinch Lemonade, a Grumble Grinch Pie with apple filling, and a new Cheesy Chicken Stack burger. The menu also sees the return of the Double Big Tasty, now with a bacon add-on option, alongside new beverages like the Coconut Noglobe Latte and Hot Chocolate, and a Chocolate Brownie McFlurry.
So, whether you're planning a post-present snack or need a break from the holiday cooking, be sure to check your local restaurant's plans online before you head out this festive season.
