Manchester United have reportedly abandoned their pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, believing the combined cost of wages and transfer fee does not represent value for money. The Red Devils had identified the Italian as a top target, but with Newcastle demanding at least £100 million for the 26-year-old, United have decided to look elsewhere.
Ederson Deal Nears Completion
In contrast, United appear to have secured a bargain with the £35 million transfer of Atalanta's Ederson. The Brazilian midfielder, currently on World Cup duty, confirmed the move is nearly finalised. Speaking to Tuttosport after Brazil's 3-0 win over Haiti, Ederson said: “It’s practically almost all sorted. I have to make the most of this moment. I am here, and it is a wonderful thing, something you must always live to the fullest.”
Competition for Tonali
United were not alone in their interest for Tonali. Tottenham Hotspur submitted an £80 million bid over the weekend, but Newcastle rejected it, holding out for a higher fee. Manchester City have also been in discussions with the Magpies. Tonali joined Newcastle in 2023 for a reported £55 million, and the club is keen to maximise profit on any sale.
Alternative Targets
With Tonali off the table, United have turned their attention to other midfield targets. One name on their list is West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes, who impressed last season despite the Hammers' relegation. West Ham value Fernandes at £80 million, but United expect a lower fee given the club's drop to the Championship. Earlier, United also considered Newcastle's Elliot Anderson but were put off by the financial demands.
Champions League Return
United, now under permanent manager Michael Carrick, will face a busier schedule next season with their return to the Champions League. Last season, they played only 40 matches across all competitions, but the European campaign will add at least eight more fixtures.
