Lidl is rolling out a Tronic Ceramic Fan Heater to all UK stores this Thursday, priced at £17.99, offering a low-cost way to stay warm without cranking up central heating. The gadget, part of the supermarket's new 'Winter Essentials' Middle Aisle range, costs as little as 18.4p per hour to run on its lowest setting.
Heater Features and Running Costs
Available in black or white from October 22, the heater features an adjustable thermostat to control room temperature, with two heat settings: 700W and 1200W. Lidl's product description notes it "Can also be used as a fan. With control dials. Practical handle at the top. Protection against tipping and overheating."
Under the current UK energy price cap, running the heater on its low (700W) setting costs 18.4p per hour, while the maximum power (1200W) setting costs 31.6p per hour. The ceramic technology allows the unit to heat up and distribute warmth quickly, and the adjustable thermostat automatically shuts off the heating elements once the room reaches the desired temperature, further reducing actual hourly costs.
Zone Heating Savings
Although electricity is technically more expensive per unit than gas, the Lidl heater becomes a money-saver when used for "zone heating." A standard whole-house gas central heating system can cost £1.70-£2 per hour to run. By turning down the central thermostat and using the space heater to heat only the room in use, households could save a significant amount each month.
The main principle is to heat the human, not the home. Electric space heaters are highly efficient for personal, targeted warmth, but trying to heat multiple rooms with them will quickly drive up bills.
