Knoops free hot chocolate offer draws huge Newcastle queues

Huge crowds queued in Newcastle city centre on Wednesday for free hot chocolates from Knoops, with demand so high that some people were left empty-handed.

The popular drinks spot, located in premises that previously housed Pret A Manger and then Poke, offered a free small hot chocolate to anyone who ordered through the Knoops app from midday. Customers could choose between the bestselling 34% milk or the richer 54% dark, made with whole, oat or soya milk.

Queue stretches back to Grey's Monument

A large queue quickly formed outside the shop, stretching back to Grey's Monument and beyond. ChronicleLive captured a photo of the queue as it was growing, and videos shared on social media throughout the day showed the extent of the demand.

Some people who arrived too late to claim their freebie ended up missing out, as the offer proved more popular than anticipated.

Recent buzz in the city centre

The scenes outside Knoops came just days after a large crowd gathered at Monument to see Scottish funk rockers High Fade perform a nearly four-hour busking session. The group, which has close to half a million followers on Instagram, entertained fans ahead of their gig at Digital nearby.
