John Lewis has announced the appointment of Jacqui Markham as its new creative director of fashion. Markham graduated with first-class honours in fashion design from Northumbria University in 1993. She began her career at Topshop in 1997, rising to design director by 2011 before leaving in 2015 for a similar role at Asos. An insider notes that Markham possesses impeccable taste and was instrumental in transforming Asos by shifting its emphasis from mundane dresses to affordable, stylish outfits coveted by fashion insiders.

She returned to Topshop in 2015, resuming her design director role until 2019. During this tenure, she oversaw key initiatives such as London Fashion Week shows, the NewGen sponsorship for emerging designers, and a three-year collaboration with Kate Moss. Although Markham, in her 50s, may not be as widely recognized as figures like Jonathan Anderson, Dior's new creative director, her influence on the average woman's wardrobe has been substantial.

Turnaround Strategy and Future Plans

This appointment is part of an £800 million turnaround programme overseen by managing director Peter Ruis. John Lewis has recently added 100 new fashion brands to its roster, including an exclusive collection by Mulberry. Markham's first mission involves deeper investment in John Lewis's own-label lines, highlighted by the launch of its largest-ever cashmere collection this autumn, aiming to boost sales by 20%.
