The Spellow pub, a historic match-day venue for Everton FC supporters on Goodison Road in Walton, has been sold, with new owners planning to transform the ground floor into a community store. The Liverpool ECHO can confirm the sale, which follows the pub's closure after Everton's men's team moved to the Hill Dickinson stadium just over a year ago.
Background of the Spellow Pub
The Spellow pub was a beloved 'Blues' pub that served generations of Everton match-goers. However, after the club's relocation, match-day revenues in the area dropped significantly. While Everton Women now play at Goodison Park, the visitor numbers are lower, leading to the closure of several well-known pubs, including The Winslow Hotel and The Spellow.
In October 2025, the pub was listed for sale with a guide price of £250,000. ONYX Real Estate's website described it as a "versatile property located in close proximity to the iconic Goodison Park and Anfield Football Stadium," featuring a spacious ground floor bar and lounge area, plus six bedrooms upstairs with potential for Airbnb-style rentals or conversion.
Issues at the Property
In February 2026, a complaint was submitted to Liverpool City Council about the condition of the property, including heavy-duty rubbish and discarded household items. The council served the owner a notice to clear environmental hazards under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949. At that time, the building had not been sold and remained the responsibility of the owner.
Sale and New Plans
Earlier this week, the ECHO contacted Onyx Real Estate Liverpool, the agent handling the sale, which confirmed the pub had been sold. The new owners have big plans for the property, including converting the ground floor into a community store. This development comes as a relief to the surrounding neighbourhood, which has reported several incidents of anti-social behaviour linked to the property.
With plans for a community-focused project, the Spellow pub is set to once again become a focal point for local residents, just as it served football fans for many years.
