Hillier Garden Centre in Hemel Hempstead to Close in January 2027
Hillier Garden Centre Hemel Hempstead Closing Jan 2027

Hillier Garden Centres has confirmed the closure of its Hemel Hempstead branch, with the site set to be demolished and transformed into a storage and distribution facility. The beloved garden centre, which has been part of the community since it opened in 1990, will shut its doors in January 2027.

Closure Confirmed by Chairman

George Hillier, chairman of Hillier Nurseries and Garden Centres, stated: "This was not an easy decision for us to make; however, it does present an exciting opportunity to reinvest in our business and continue the growth trajectory the company has achieved in recent years." He added that the company is committed to supporting its Hemel Hempstead team during the transition and thanked colleagues and customers for their loyalty.

Local Council Approval

The local council has reportedly given the green light to plans to demolish the site and replace it with a storage and distribution hub. The decision has sparked disappointment among locals, who have taken to social media to express their sadness.

Community Reaction

One customer wrote: "Love going there for a cuppa and a scone... beautiful plants! This is very sad. Don't we have enough storage facilities?" Another commented: "So sad, used to go there as a child... I loved going, and now take my one-year-old as she loves the fish and flowers!" A third added: "My mum would be so sad to hear this if she was still here. I got so many memories of us spending time there."

Family Business Since 1864

Hillier Nurseries is a family-run business that has been growing and selling plants since 1864. It operates 22 garden centres across the South of England. The Hemel Hempstead store opened in 1990 and has been a fixture for local gardeners and families.

Other Garden Centre Closures

This closure follows the announcement earlier this week of another garden centre shutting down in Ormesby St Michael, near Great Yarmouth. That business cited the stress and pressure of running a small business in the current economy as the reason for closure.
