Halfords to Shut All UK Stores for Three Days Over Festive Season
Halfords closes stores on Boxing Day and New Year's Day

Motoring and cycling retailer Halfords has confirmed it will shut all of its stores across the United Kingdom for three days during the upcoming festive period.

A 'Well-Earned' Break for Staff

The company stated that the decision to close on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day is a gesture of thanks to its employees. Stores will also, as is standard, remain closed on Christmas Day but will operate normal hours on all other days. Henry Birch, Chief Executive Officer at Halfords, explained the move, saying colleagues often work long hours throughout the year to keep customers on the road.

"It’s important that we recognise that effort and give everyone the chance to switch off and spend quality time with family and friends," Birch said. He described the closure as a "small but meaningful way to say thank you" and to ensure teams return refreshed for the new year.

Strong Financial Performance Supports Decision

The announcement follows a positive trading update from the retailer. For the half-year to 26 September, Halfords reported a 9% rise in sales within its cycling division compared to the same period last year.

This contributed to an overall revenue increase of 3.3%, reaching £893.3 million. The group's motoring revenues saw like-for-like growth of 1.1%, while its autocentres business expanded by 4.3% on a like-for-like basis.

Other Retailers Following Suit

Halfords is not alone in choosing to give staff time off after Christmas. Discount chains Home Bargains and Aldi have also confirmed they will keep their stores shut on both 26 December and 1 January.

Home Bargains made its announcement on Facebook, thanking colleagues for their hard work and encouraging them to enjoy the break. Similarly, Aldi UK's Communications Director, Rebecca Heley, stated the closure was to ensure all colleagues could relax with loved ones, calling it "one small way of saying thank you." Aldi will extend its opening hours in the days before Christmas to help customers prepare.

The trend highlights a growing focus on employee welfare in the retail sector during the busy holiday season.
