Greggs Unveils Compact Bitesize Store Format
The high street bakery giant Greggs has launched an innovative new shop concept called Bitesize Greggs, marking another significant step in its nationwide expansion strategy. The first of these compact stores opened to the public on Friday at Sevenoaks Railway Station, offering a streamlined selection of the chain's most popular products.
Strategic Rollout and Expansion Ambitions
This initial launch is just the beginning of a broader trial. Greggs has confirmed that two further Bitesize locations will open next month in Dartford Station, Kent and at Cheshire Oaks. This move is a key component of the company's aggressive growth plan, which saw it announce it was on track for 120 net openings in 2025.
With a current estate of 2,675 shops, the company has publicly stated its belief that it has the potential to grow to as many as 3,500 sites across the UK. The new Bitesize format is specifically designed to penetrate high-footfall, prime locations where traditional larger stores are not feasible due to space constraints.
'Small But Mighty' Concept Targets On-the-Go Customers
Tony Rowson, Property Director at Greggs, expressed his enthusiasm for the new venture. "We're excited to announce the launch of our Bitesize Greggs concept," he said. "This small but mighty new format will allow us to reach more customers on the go from compact units, whilst still offering a selection of our best-selling products."
He emphasised that the rollout of Bitesize Greggs is initially taking place on a trial basis and will play a crucial role in supporting the company's wider estate growth plans. By adapting to the limited space available in transport hubs and other busy areas, Greggs is strategically positioning itself to capture even more of the UK's food-on-the-go market.
