Greggs has launched its festive menu, but some customers are disappointed that it has come at the expense of another popular baked treat that only launched a couple of months ago. The Steak and Stilton Bake, which returned in September as part of the autumn menu, appears to have been dropped to make way for the Christmas offering.
Festive Bake returns with new recipe
A Facebook post by Newfoodsuk, which regularly highlights new food launches in the UK, revealed the return of the Festive Bake. The post features a sandwich board pictured outside a Greggs branch, showcasing the baked treat and boasting of a "new and improved recipe".
Describing the product, Greggs' website states: "The Festive Bake is back and better than ever and we're brave enough to say it: turkey can get stuffed. We've been proudly filling our Festive Bakes with superiorly soft, more moist chicken since 2009 and, this year, we're not backing down."
The description continues: "Cooked chicken, smoked ham hock, and sweetcure bacon with soft cheese and pork, sage and onion stuffing in a creamy sage and cranberry sauce, wrapped in glazed puff pastry with a crumb topping. The Greggs Festive Bake - hands down the most Christmassy thing about Christmas."
Customers call for Steak and Stilton return
The advertisement describes it as "our best ever Festive Bake", adding it costs "from £2.50". While some shoppers were delighted to see the Festive Bake return for another year, others expressed disappointment that it seemed to have replaced another favourite.
One customer commented: "Bring back Steak and Stilton! Please." Another posted: "Bring back the steak and stilton, miles better." A third remarked: "Wish they kept the steak and stilton."
Steak and Stilton Bake to return later
Greggs, which has almost 2,800 branches across the UK, axed the Steak and Stilton roll back in 2019, only to resurrect it – in bake form – in September this year. Describing the product, the bakery chain said: "It features diced beef cooked in a rich gravy, Blue Stilton cheese and grilled onions, enclosed in our flakey glazed puff pastry and topped with a black pepper crumb."
Yet, just two months after its comeback, the popular item appears to have vanished from menus once again. However, Greggs has pledged that the Steak and Stilton Bake will be back. A spokesperson said: "Our Steak and Stilton Bake is currently taking a break, but fans can rest assured it will return at a later date. In the meantime, we've welcomed our Christmas menu into shops this week, including the iconic Festive Bake."
