Furniture Chain At Home Files for Bankruptcy, Plans Store Closures

Furniture retailer At Home has filed for bankruptcy and announced plans to close 26 stores by next autumn. The Texas-based company, which operates 260 locations across 40 states, cited economic challenges including the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic and US tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

In court documents, At Home listed several post-pandemic headwinds it faced in 2022, such as inflationary cost pressures driven by rising freight rates, softening demand in the home décor market, and a shift in consumer preferences towards online shopping. The company, which relies heavily on foreign suppliers, also highlighted the impact of Trump's trade war, particularly with China.

At Home stated that while it had dealt with tariffs for some time, the volatility of the current tariff environment intensified financial pressure and accelerated the need for a comprehensive solution. The closures will affect stores in New York, California, Florida, and other states, with the process expected to be completed by 30 September.
