Disney is set to close one of its popular discount merchandise stores in Florida this spring, according to insiders and fan reports, leaving devoted shoppers devastated. The Disney Character Warehouse clearance outlet at Sawgrass Mills Outlet Mall in Sunrise, Florida, is scheduled to shut its doors on April 15, as confirmed by Cast Members, Disney's term for employees, and posts in dedicated social media groups.
End of an Era for Bargain Hunters
The Sunrise location, one of three Disney Character Warehouse stores in Florida, has long been a favourite spot for South Florida shoppers, cruise passengers heading to Port Everglades, and visitors from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. It sells discounted and overstock merchandise from Walt Disney World and Disney Cruise Line, offering items at 30 to 70 percent off, including rare or limited products no longer available in parks.
Reasons Behind the Closure
Disney's decision not to renew the store's lease appears to stem from several challenges. According to the Disney fan blog Inside The Magic, citing Cast Members, issues include resellers buying up stock in bulk to sell online, the store's three-hour distance from Disney World, and live shoppers—individuals who stream themselves and take orders from viewers—who have upset regular customers. These factors have reportedly led to revenues falling short of expectations.
In response, Disney recently tightened its return policy across all Character Warehouse and Cast Connection stores to deter resellers. As of February 1, all sales are final with no returns or exchanges, as shown in in-store signage shared online. Members of the Sawgrass Mills Mall Facebook group have largely blamed resellers for the outlet's impending closure, with one person writing, "Thank you resellers for ruining a good thing!"
Fan Reactions and Uncertainty
Devastated fans have taken to social media to express their sorrow. One group member wrote, "Yes, they are closing. I was there yesterday and asked one of the associates. It's happening in April. Headquarters decided not to renew their rental lease. The revenues are not as they should be. They are not relocating either. Very sad news." Another pleaded, "Please tell me this an early April Fools Joke," while a third added, "I've been going to that same store since I was a kid! I will be heartbroken if they close!"
Disney has not announced whether its two Orlando-area Character Warehouse outlets, at Orlando International Premium Outlets and Vineland Premium Outlets near Walt Disney World, will remain open beyond their current leases. Attempts to reach the Disney Character Warehouse at Sawgrass Mills were unsuccessful, and The Independent has contacted both Sawgrass Mills Mall and Disney for comment.
Broader Retail Context
Elsewhere at Sawgrass Mills, the Neiman Marcus Last Call store is holding a closing sale as parent company Saks Global Enterprises prepares to shutter most Saks OFF 5TH and Last Call locations nationwide amid Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This highlights a broader trend of retail challenges, though Disney's closure specifically points to unique issues like reseller activity and changing shopping behaviours.
The closure marks a significant loss for locals and tourists who saw the Disney Character Warehouse as the perfect mix of bargain and treasure hunting. As the April 15 deadline approaches, fans are left mourning a beloved shopping destination while awaiting official word on the future of Disney's other discount outlets in the region.
