Dennis and June's Sandwich Fare, a long-standing lunch spot in Newcastle's Grainger Market, has closed after more than 32 years of trading. Grainger Market confirmed the closure to Chronicle Live, marking the end of an era for the popular stall.
A market institution since the 1990s
The stall was first opened by June Jefferson, now 70, and her late husband Dennis. Over the years, it became a familiar stop for shoppers seeking a quick lunch and coffee, with prices remaining steady and a menu offering traditional fare alongside classic sandwiches.
The eatery was known for its economical cheese savoury sandwiches and its use of locally sourced meat from the market's butchers. In 2019, the Chronicle's What's On editor described its chips as "magical."
Owner's health scare last year
Last year, June made headlines not only for her food but for a medical emergency at the stall. She felt "a crushing pain in the chest," and after an ambulance was called, she had a seizure and stopped breathing for three minutes. Grainger Market staff performed CPR before she regained consciousness.
June was taken to the RVI by paramedics, and after medication and monitoring, she was discharged and returned to work the next day. She said: "I came back to work because I felt alright. I feel safer at work because I am among people. I am smashing now – bright as a button. I'm from Scotswood. I am a Scotswood lass. I am tough."
End of an era
The original signage is now visible, with the front covered by a tarp as the market awaits a new resident to take its place. June has hung up her apron after more than three decades of serving city centre shoppers.
