Dan Burn Sandwich at Newcastle Shop Draws Queues
Dan Burn Sandwich Draws Queues in Newcastle

The 'Dan Burner' sandwich, a tribute to Newcastle United and England defender Dan Burn, is on sale at Frankie & Tony's Sandwich Bar in Newcastle city centre, drawing queues out the door. Priced at £5.33—a nod to Burn's squad number—the sandwich features spicy cheese, salami, chorizo, and sun-dried tomatoes, offering a spicy kick.

Popular Choice Amid World Cup Hype

ChronicleLive's Andrew Musgrove tried the sandwich on his lunch break ahead of England's match against Argentina. He noted that while some might expect a calm, comforting dish like Chicken Korma to represent Burn, the 'Dan Burner' packs heat. "One might feel that Norway defender Leo Ostigard may well argue it's definitely got the traits of the big man from Blyth," Musgrove wrote.

The sandwich has been on the menu for a while, not a recent addition after Burn's World Cup heroics. The portion is sizeable, with a choice of half a dozen bread types and a generous salad filling. "The sandwiches from this place often come with a joke about being able to fill you for lunch and tea!" Musgrove added.

Flavor Profile and Pricing

Musgrove, not a fan of spicy food, was initially wary but found the heat manageable after the first bite. "The salami compliments the spicy cheese and chorizo while the sun-dried tomatoes just offers that note of sweetness which finishes the sandwich off," he said. He singled out the chorizo as the standout ingredient, describing it as "bold and rich with that spicy hit."

At £5.33, the sandwich is proving popular. Some office colleagues expected a taller sandwich given Burn's height, but Musgrove noted that despite its size, "it's a roll that packs quite the punch."

Queues and Anticipation

Frankie & Tony's, located on Ridley Place off Northumberland Street, is known for its large selection and friendly service. Lunchtime queues often stretch out the door. Musgrove predicted that if Burn has another strong performance against Argentina, the tribute sandwich may grow even more popular.

Musgrove concluded, "For me, there's not a better offering than Frankie and Tony's—a big choice, and their jacket potatoes are top notch, alongside the friendly faces serving you!"
