Costco's Free Sample Suspension Sparks Social Media Storm

Costco has suspended its free sample giveaways in many US stores amid the coronavirus outbreak, prompting a wave of humorous yet heartfelt complaints on social media. The bulk-buying superstore, known for its generous tasting stations, has implemented the measure to minimise health risks as COVID-19 cases rise.

Customers took to Twitter to express their dismay, with many joking that the loss of free samples was the most devastating impact of the virus so far. One user lamented, 'Where am I supposed to get free lunch now?' while another declared, 'Costco suspending samples due to coronavirus is bigger news than SXSW being cancelled.'

The policy appears to be store-led, with outlets in California, Washington state, and Florida confirming they do not know when samples will return. Costco's CFO Richard Galanti noted the company is 'keeping a close eye on the developments of the coronavirus,' prioritising member and employee safety.

Despite the sample halt, Costco has seen a sales boost as customers stock up on essentials. Net sales for the four weeks to March 1 rose 13.8% year-on-year, driven by demand for shelf-stable foods, cleaning supplies, and hand sanitisers. Some stores have imposed purchase limits on high-demand items.
