An 18-year-old woman has died after suffering a suspected allergic reaction following a meal at Almost Famous Burgers in Manchester city centre. The woman, named locally as Shahida Shahid, collapsed after eating at the restaurant in Great Northern Warehouse at about 20:30 GMT on Friday.
Police and the Food Standards Agency have launched a joint investigation into the incident. The woman, believed to be a maths student at the University of Manchester, was reported to have collapsed in Withy Grove, more than half a mile from the restaurant.
A police spokesman said: 'Initial inquiries have established the woman had been out for a meal in the Great Northern Warehouse prior to her collapse and may have suffered an allergic reaction to her food.'
Marie Carter, company director of Almost Famous Burgers, expressed devastation at the news but said it would be 'inappropriate to comment' while the investigation is ongoing.
