Bold Street's first proper pub The Angel Inn opens tomorrow

The Angel Inn, described as Bold Street's "first proper boozer," opens its doors tomorrow after months of anticipation. The venue is the latest venture from Rob Gutmann's 1936 Pub Company, which also operates The Vines on Lime Street, The Masonic Arms on Lark Lane, and The Monro on Duke Street.

Former Maggie May's site transformed

The Angel Inn occupies the space formerly home to Maggie May's, which closed last year after a 20-year run as a family business. Renovations have been underway for months, reclaiming Victorian features and delivering a traditional pub aesthetic. The venue welcomes its first customers on Wednesday, August 12.

The team at 1936 Pub Company said the desire to provide an authentic concept that might have graced Bold Street in its 19th-century heyday led director Rob to scour the country for "perfect period architectural salvage and antiques."

Authentic Victorian pub experience

A spokesperson said: "It will possibly be the first ever true pub on Bold Street. In its illustrious history, Liverpool’s iconic shopping street has been home to much and varied retail, many restaurants and coffee shops, and indeed the odd bar or two. But never a proper boozer."

"We’re establishing The Angel Inn on the former site of Maggie May’s Cafe. Before the new century, it had operated as a vinyl record store for many years. The Maggie’s Cafe team retired their 20-year-old family business at the end of last year and were keen for their successors to offer something very different. We were happy to oblige."

"We are first and foremost pub people, and particularly passionate about Victorian pubs and architecture. As we began to work on the old Maggie’s site, we were able to reveal many 19th-century features lost to time. We have made these elements key components of the look and feel of our new/old pub interior."

Signature 1936 Pub Company style

The venue features the signature 1936 Pub Company aesthetic, with 19th-century features as key components. Like the rest of the company's venues, it sells beer, spirits, wine, sandwiches, and pies. Upstairs, there are still nods to Maggie May's, and outside, several nods to angels.
