Winter Fuel Payment 2026: Dates, eligibility and amounts
Winter Fuel Payment 2026: Dates, eligibility and amounts

People born on or before 27 June 1960 could receive between £100 and £300 to help pay heating bills for winter 2026 to 2027.

However, if your income exceeds £35,000, HMRC will reclaim your Winter Fuel Payment. Your partner's income doesn't count towards this threshold.

Payment dates and letters

Eligible people will receive letters from the Department of Work and Pensions in October or November detailing their entitlement. Most payments will be made in November or December 2026, according to the DWP.

State pensioners born before September 28, 1946, will receive an automatic £100 increase for winter 2026. This means eligible pensioners over 80 will receive £300, up from the standard £200.

Qualifying week and variations

Payment amounts depend on your circumstances during September 21-27, 2026 - known as the 'qualifying week'. If you share accommodation with another eligible person, your payment could vary if you receive Pension Credit, Universal Credit, or income-related ESA.

Payments are made automatically to the bank account where your benefits are deposited. Rules differ for people living in Scotland and Northern Ireland, where separate schemes exist.

Contact if no payment

If you don't receive a letter or payment by January 28, 2026, contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre on 0800 731 0160.
