British Heart Foundation (BHF) has announced the closure of 150 stores across England and Wales over the next two financial years, as part of a strategy to strengthen its remaining retail network. The charity will shutter approximately 90 shops by the end of March 2027, with the remaining 60 closing by March 2028. Staff cuts at the charity's centralised retail operation are also being implemented.
Closures Aim to Protect Remaining Shops
BHF stated that the closures are designed to ensure its remaining shops remain financially viable and continue to generate funds for research into cardiovascular disease. The charity emphasised that its overall finances are healthy, with strong performance in fundraising and legacy efforts. Online retail operations, including sales through eBay and the BHF website, will continue unaffected.
The closures represent just under a quarter of BHF's 640 outlets. Dr. Charmaine Griffiths, BHF Chief Executive, said in June: "We know this will be a difficult time for our dedicated colleagues and volunteers in affected stores and emphasise our deep appreciation and gratitude for all they have done for BHF and the communities they serve."
Challenging Trading Environment
Dr. Griffiths added: "Like most retailers, we are facing an exceptionally challenging trading environment. Cardiovascular disease remains one of the UK’s biggest killers and our priority is funding research to save lives. We must take the difficult step to close some of our shops to sustain retail’s important contribution to funding BHF’s ground-breaking research."
