A former Marks and Spencer employee has shared insider knowledge on the best times to find yellow sticker bargains, revealing that early morning visits are key to securing discounts.
Optimal Times for Yellow Sticker Deals
Katherine McPhillips, who worked at the M&S bakery as a university student, advises shoppers to visit stores first thing in the morning, around 9am, when overnight staff have applied reductions. She notes that contrary to popular belief, visiting near closing time is often the least productive, as staff are busy with closing tasks.
Another opportune window is late afternoon, between 3pm and 5pm, when shift changes occur and incoming staff apply markdowns. Aiming for around 4pm is recommended, as lunchtime items like sandwiches and salads are often reduced.
Staff Insights and Etiquette
McPhillips explains that during her tenure, yellow stickers were typically applied by overnight workers after the store closed. She also warns that managers would instruct staff to stop applying stickers if customers gathered in anticipation, as large crowds can obstruct aisles and lead to disrespectful behavior, such as snatching items from staff.
She emphasizes the importance of politeness: if you see a staff member applying stickers, give them space and remain courteous. Each M&S branch may have slightly different reduction times, so asking a staff member during a quiet period can help you secure bargains.
