Symington Shoes, a family-run independent shoe shop in Galashiels, Scotland, has announced it will close at the end of June after more than 100 years of trading. The business, which operates as A Symington Quality Footwear on Channel Street, cited difficult trading conditions and the retirement of three staff members as reasons for the decision.
The closure announcement on social media stated: 'With three staff retiring and extremely challenging trading conditions, we have reluctantly decided to close at the end of June. We will have a closing down sale with 20% off all spring and summer stock.' The shop has since launched the sale and been advertising remaining stock, including women's and children's shoes, on Facebook.
Local customers expressed sadness and gratitude, with one commenting: 'Wishing you all a happy retirement and thanks for your service. You will be missed.' Another wrote: 'Very sorry to read this. It’s so very important to get children’s feet measured properly to ensure healthy foot development.' A third said: 'The end of an era. Both our kids always had their feet measured and got their shoes there.'
In response, the store's management said: 'Thank you all for your kind comments and support on what has been a difficult day for team Symington.' The closure adds to concerns about the health of the British high street, as many long-established businesses struggle with rising costs and a shift to online shopping. However, recent research from Square indicates that loyal customers generate five times more revenue for local businesses, offering a glimmer of hope.
