Beefeater and Brewers Fayre restaurants will permanently close all 106 sites by September 10, affecting locations across London and the surrounding home counties. The decision by owner Whitbread, which also operates Premier Inn, will result in 3,800 job losses as part of a cost-saving plan targeting £250 million.
In London, four Beefeater outlets are set to shut: in Twickenham, Woolwich, Beckton and Harrow. Many more are located in Kent, Hertfordshire, Essex, Surrey, Sussex and Berkshire.
Conversion and expansion plans
One of the affected sites, at the Premier Inn London Beckton Hotel, is among those adjoining a Premier Inn that will be converted into an integrated food and beverage offering. Whitbread plans to open more restaurants inside Premier Inn hotels and increase its total hotel room count from 86,600 to 96,000 by 2031.
The closures follow a previous round in April 2024, when 112 restaurants were shut. Whitbread chief executive Dominic Paul said at the time: “We always challenge ourselves to improve and, in light of significant cost increases in the form of business rates and national insurance, as well as the implied market discount to our inherent value, we’ve looked hard at the options open to us to maximise value creation over the medium and long-term.” He added: “This plan will transform Whitbread into a higher-margin, higher-returning pure-play hotel business.”
