Asda Shoppers Can Save £17 by Bending Down for Own-Brand Items

A recent experiment at Asda has revealed that shoppers can save significant money by choosing own-brand products, often located on lower shelves. Christopher Sharp tested the theory from Martin Lewis's Money Saving Expert website, which suggests supermarkets place pricier items at eye level and cheaper alternatives lower down.

Sharp selected 10 everyday items and compared prices of branded versus Asda own-brand products, noting their shelf positions. The own-brand shop cost just £11.26, compared to £28 for branded equivalents—a saving of £17.22.

Items like Greek yoghurt, pasta sauce, ketchup, and almond milk required bending down to find the Asda version. For mayonnaise and marmalade, both branded and own-brand were on the bottom shelf. However, pasta and bread did not require crouching for either option.

Sharp concluded that while not every item required bending, the savings from choosing own-brand products were substantial. The trick remains effective for budget-conscious shoppers looking to cut costs amid the ongoing cost of living crisis.
