Asda launches new convenience stores with £1m investment

Asda is trialling a new convenience store format in Glasgow, with three shops set to open through a partnership with independent retailer One-O-One. Each store will stock around 3,500 products, including fresh and chilled groceries, food-to-go ranges, and Asda-branded goods.

Testing the format

The supermarket plans to use the initial three stores to test the concept before potentially expanding it more widely across the UK. Asda said it intends to scale the model quickly if the trial proves successful.

The launch is supported by a £1 million investment and marks Asda's move into supplying independently operated convenience stores. Unlike its existing Asda Express branches, the new shops will not be wholly owned by the supermarket. Instead, established independent retailers can operate stores under the Asda Convenience name while accessing its products, prices, and supply network.

Partnering with local expertise

Asda said the model would combine its value-led range with the local knowledge of independent shop operators. Joseph Sutton, Asda Express, Fuel and Wholesale director, said: "Launching Asda Convenience is an important step in extending our reach and making Asda's great value accessible to more customers in the way they want to shop today."

He added: "By partnering with experienced independent retailers, we can combine our product range, pricing and supply chain strengths with their local expertise to create a truly compelling offer. This is just the beginning, and we see a real opportunity to scale this approach while building a broader wholesale business."

One-O-One partnership

One-O-One, which has an established network of convenience stores across Scotland's Central Belt, has been selected as Asda's first partner for the format. Paul Stirling, group retail director at One-O-One, said: "We're incredibly proud to be the chosen convenience retail partner to launch the new Asda Convenience format and to play a key role in bringing this exciting proposition to customers across Scotland."

He continued: "With a long-established presence in communities throughout the Central Belt, we've built trusted local stores that understand the individual needs of the neighbourhoods they serve. Combining that local knowledge with Asda's exceptional value, market-leading own-brand range and strong customer proposition creates a compelling convenience offer that gives shoppers greater choice than ever before."

Asda said customers could expect the stores to offer the value, products, and service associated with its wider supermarket estate. The company will assess the performance of the three Glasgow shops before deciding how widely to introduce the new format.
