Argos to Launch Marketplace in Major Challenge to Amazon, eBay and Etsy

Argos, the UK's second-largest general merchandise retailer, is reportedly set to launch a third-party marketplace within the next twelve months. This strategic move places Argos in direct competition with established online giants such as Amazon, eBay, and Etsy, marking a significant shift in its business model.

Transformation Plan Led by Graham Biggart

The marketplace initiative forms a crucial component of Argos' ambitious three-year transformation plan, which is being spearheaded by Sainsbury's chief strategy officer and Argos managing director, Graham Biggart. In a statement to Retail Week, Mr Biggart emphasised the strategic importance of this development.

"Introducing a marketplace within the next year marks an exciting next step in Argos' multi-year transformation," he stated. "It reflects what we know customers want – more choice, more convenience and more reasons to shop with confidence."

He further highlighted Argos' strong market position, noting over one billion annual website visits and a brand reputation built on value, trust, and quality. The marketplace will initially launch with a select range of partner sellers, aiming to complement Argos' existing core product ranges and valued supplier relationships.

Context of Financial Pressures and Strategic Shifts

This announcement comes amidst a challenging financial backdrop for Argos. Sainsbury's latest financial results revealed a 2.2% decline in Argos sales over the six-week period leading to January 3rd. Chief executive Simon Roberts attributed this to subdued consumer spending on higher-ticket items like furniture, intense promotional activity, and a weak gaming market, all exacerbated by ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

"People are very focused on cost of living and inflation and looking for value for money in all the spending decisions that they make," Roberts explained, underscoring the current economic climate influencing retail dynamics.

The marketplace plan follows the collapse of talks in September 2025 to sell Argos to JD.com. Sainsbury's stated that JD.com's terms and commitments were "not in the best interests of Sainsbury's shareholders, colleagues and broader stakeholders." Just a day prior to the marketplace news, the company had announced it was seeking a deal to "accelerate Argos' transformation," indicating a renewed focus on internal strategic development.

Argos' Market Position and Future Strategy

Argos holds a formidable position in the UK retail landscape, operating more than 1,100 collection points and boasting the third most visited retail website in the country. A Sainsbury's spokesman reaffirmed the company's commitment to Argos' future, stating, "We are really focused on delivering a strong future for Argos."

The company's "More Argos, more often" transformation strategy is reportedly making good progress. Focused actions include extending product ranges, enhancing digital capabilities, and improving relevance to increase customer frequency and spending, while also driving operating model efficiencies.

This move into the marketplace arena represents a bold attempt by Argos to leverage its extensive digital footprint and trusted brand to capture a larger share of the competitive online retail market, directly challenging the dominance of platforms like Amazon, eBay, and Etsy.
