A recent taste test of supermarket curry kits has revealed that Aldi's Coconut Yoghurt outperformed Sainsbury's in terms of flavour and value. The test, which evaluated a range of curry kits including balti, tikka masala, and butter chicken, found that Aldi's offering was 'incredible value' and produced a 'bright orange, mildly spiced sauce with notes of coconut, fenugreek and coriander'.
The test highlighted that takeaways have become increasingly expensive, often costing more than eating out, due to high delivery charges. As a result, many consumers are turning to curry kits as a cheaper and quicker alternative. The kits were praised for being 'astoundingly good value' and 'restaurant quality', with minimal processing and simple ingredients.
However, the test also noted some drawbacks. None of the products provided details about ingredient quality or origin, and few shared sustainability credentials. Additionally, some kits required the inclusion of more than two additional ingredients, such as cream, or odd quantities like half a pepper, which led to a slight reduction in scores.
Overall, the test concluded that supermarket curry kits offer a convenient and affordable way to enjoy a home-cooked curry without the expense of a takeaway. Aldi's Coconut Yoghurt emerged as a standout product for its taste and value, beating Sainsbury's in the comparison.
