Aldi Recalls £11.99 Hairdryer Over Electric Shock Risk

Beauty shoppers are being urged to stop using a popular Aldi Specialbuy after it was found to pose a serious safety risk. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) issued an urgent notice for the Ambiano Ionic Hairdryer on October 18, 2026, warning that the device, manufactured in China, presents a "high" risk of electric shock or fire.

Product Recall Details and Risks

The budget supermarket's middle aisle is often packed with bargain hunters, and the Ambiano Ionic Hairdryer has become highly coveted over the years, offering "salon-style results" for just £11.99. However, the product regulator said in its notice: "The product presents a risk of electric shock or fire as, over time, the power cord may become damaged, allowing access to live parts or causing overheating. If the user were to touch an accessible live part, they could receive an electric shock."

The Specialbuy, manufactured in China, was available in four colourways - black, orange, yellow and white. All devices with the model number 849855, sold between August and September 2025, have been affected. Since it does not meet the requirements for the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, the hairdryer has been recalled, and shoppers have been told to "stop using it immediately and return it to their nearest Aldi store for a full refund."

Aldi's Voluntary Recall and Customer Guidance

Aldi also issued its own voluntary recall for the haircare product, describing the move as a "precautionary measure." The supermarket confirmed that all of its products "go through rigorous safety and quality checks" before going on sale. Sharing its recall online, Aldi said: "As a precautionary measure, our supplier is recalling the Ambiano Ionic Hairdryer (sold between August and September 2025) because of a technical fault. Anyone who bought this product should return it to their nearest store for a full refund. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Customers are advised to check for the affected barcodes, which differ depending on the colour. Located on the underside of the dryer, these are 4061462195075 (black), 4061462195211 (white), 4061462195310 (yellow) and 4061462195372 (orange).

Product Background and Next Steps

The Ambiano Ionic Hairdryer has earned a cult reputation among middle aisle fans. Its compact design and use of similar technology have seen it dubbed a 'dupe' for the coveted Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer that retails at £250. Boasting ionic technology, the gadget can "reduce frizz and enhance shine," and whether drying or styling, it "leaves hair looking smooth, sleek and full of healthy-looking volume."

The OPSS is the UK's national product regulator, ensuring most goods sold across the country are safe and compliant with strict laws. It provides safety reports and product recall notices that can all be accessed online. Anyone who has an affected hairdryer should return it to their nearest Aldi for a refund.
