Aldi gets green light for new Barry supermarket on old gas holder site
Aldi approved for new Barry supermarket on Cardiff Road

Aldi has been granted planning permission to build a new supermarket in Barry on the site of the old gas holder on Cardiff Road.

The supermarket chain submitted plans to Vale of Glamorgan Council at the beginning of this year. Councillors on the local authority's planning committee have now approved the development.

Plans for new store

According to Aldi, the new store will increase shopping options for local residents, provide a new source of employment within the area and contribute to the “regeneration” of the area by “bringing new life to an unused site for the community”.

Planning documents state: “A new Aldi could support town centre vitality and job creation which is especially appealing amid rising cost-of-living pressures.”

Councillor reaction

During the meeting to approve the development, Cllr Helen Payne said: “There’s been a lot of interest in this [application] and there have been lots of positive comments.”

She continued: “People are quite excited about having an Aldi in Barry, and investment in the east end of Barry and investment in jobs in the east end of Barry is something that I’m looking forward to.”

Cllr Mark Wilson said: “It will add to the plethora of retail that we have in Barry and I think it will make it attractive in terms of a destination.”

Parking and access details

According to the application, 114 car parking spaces are planned for the supermarket. This includes six accessible spaces, one of which being electric, eight parent and child spaces and space for up to eight bicycles.

Ten electric parking spaces are planned for the site, with provision for 22 more in the future.

Planning documents read: “The Aldi site entrance comes off a proposed junction on Cardiff Road providing a spacious road for vehicular access.

“This merges into a spine road for the site, providing the delivery HGV with direct access to the loading bay.

“The spine road is designed to link 3 separate parking sectors that make use of perimeter parking and provide a steady flow of traffic around two central islands that employ a one-way system.”

Pedestrian access routes from both Cardiff Road and Laura Road are also planned for the supermarket.
