Blossoms beat Beatles to sixth Number One album

Blossoms have secured their sixth Number One album, beating competition from The Beatles. The Stockport indie band's latest release, Songs from the Wedding Cake, topped the chart ahead of a re-release of the Fab Four's 1965 record Rubber Soul.

Six consecutive chart-toppers

All six of Blossoms' studio albums have now reached the top spot. The new record joins their self-titled 2016 debut, 2020's Foolish Loving Spaces, 2022's Ribbon Around The Bomb and 2024's Gary in achieving the accolade.

The band told the Official Charts: "We're made up. To still be doing this 10 years on from our first album, and to still be getting to Number 1, isn't something we take for granted. Thank you to everyone who bought it, played it or told a mate about it. See you on tour."

Celebrations in Stockport

They posed with their trophies outside Stockport town hall, famously nicknamed 'The Wedding Cake.' Lead singer Tom Ogden married his wife Katie there in 2021. The band also posted a video sitting at the back of a 192 bus travelling down the A6.

The song Additional Driver on the album, an anecdotal tale about Ogden bumping his car at the Apollo roundabout in Ardwick, repeats the refrain 'I should have got the 192' throughout. They took over a 192 service for the music video which accompanied its release.

In the celebratory video posted tonight (Friday, October 8), Ogden says: "Thank you to everyone who got a copy. Big up Stockport. Big up the 192."

Johnny Marr's top five debut

Elsewhere, former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr is celebrating a second solo top five album, with The Age of Everything debuting at number 5.
