Emergency services rushed to a Marks & Spencer store in south east London on Tuesday morning following a major suspected carbon monoxide leak, leaving dozens requiring medical treatment.
Emergency Response and Casualties
Thirty people were treated at the scene for symptoms of chemical inhalation after the alarm was raised at the M&S branch in Charlton. The London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade were both deployed to deal with the incident.
Of those affected, 11 patients were taken to hospital for further assessment and care. The remaining 19 individuals were treated and discharged by paramedics at the location. Firefighters using specialist equipment confirmed elevated levels of carbon monoxide inside the building and immediately began ventilation procedures to make the area safe.
Store Closure and Investigation
The popular retail store remained shut throughout Tuesday afternoon as a precaution while an internal investigation was launched by M&S management. A local councillor advised members of the public to steer clear of the area to allow emergency operations to proceed unhindered.
