UK Tourists Face 500 Euro Fines in Italy: FCDO Warning

The Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has warned British holidaymakers that they could face fines of up to 500 euros for breaking local laws in Italy, one of Europe's most popular destinations. Millions of Brits are expected to travel abroad this summer, and the FCDO's travel advice for Italy highlights specific regulations that may catch tourists off guard.

Local Laws and Fines in Italian Cities

According to the FCDO, "some Italian towns and cities have specific laws, and you could be fined for breaking them." This includes activities such as eating and drinking near major churches, historic monuments, and public buildings. It is also an offence to enter or bathe in public fountains in many towns and cities, including Florence and Rome, or swim in the canals of Venice.

Capri's Ban on Disposable Plastics

The island of Capri, reachable by ferry from Naples and Sorrento, is a major tourist attraction. However, visitors are warned that bringing any disposable plastic items—such as bags, cutlery, plates, cups, food packaging, trays, and straws—onto the island is strictly prohibited. Those caught breaking this rule could face a fine of up to 500 euros.

Other Prohibited Activities

The FCDO also advises that illegal traders operate on the streets of all major Italian cities, and it is illegal to buy items from unlicensed street traders. If caught, tourists could be stopped by local police and fined. Additionally, it is illegal to remove sand, shells, or pebbles from coastal areas in Italy, with large fines for doing so. Collecting various species of flowers, plants, and herbs from mountain and wooded areas is also prohibited. The FCDO recommends checking with regional authorities for more information.
