Primark recalls purse over chemical risk to reproductive system

Primark has issued a recall for a £6 brown colour block coin purse after it was found to contain excessive levels of phthalates, chemicals that may cause damage to the reproductive system. The UK's Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) issued an alert on June 30, 2026, stating the product presents a serious chemical risk.

Details of the recall

The affected purse, model code 3103002 with barcode 991169270, was manufactured in China. Laboratory testing revealed it contains Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), and Short Chain Chlorinated Paraffins (SCCPs) at concentrations exceeding UK chemical regulations. The OPSS stated: 'Phthalates are harmful to health and may cause damage to the reproductive system.'

What customers should do

Customers who purchased the purse are advised to stop using it immediately and keep it out of reach of children. The product can be returned to any Primark store for a full refund. Alternatively, customers can contact Primark through its help centre or live chat function for further assistance.

Background on phthalates

Phthalates are chemicals commonly used to increase the durability of plastics and textiles. Prolonged exposure to high levels of certain phthalates has been linked to reproductive and developmental health issues.
