Lando Norris Hit With 10-Place Grid Penalty for Belgian Grand Prix
Norris Gets 10-Place Grid Penalty for Belgian GP

McLaren has confirmed that Lando Norris will incur a 10-place grid penalty for this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, meaning the British driver can start no higher than 11th on Sunday. The penalty results from the team fitting a fourth control electronics unit to his car, exceeding the permitted seasonal allocation.

Reliability Issues Behind the Penalty

In a statement released on Thursday, McLaren explained that the decision was driven by a series of reliability problems with Norris's power electronics units earlier in the season. The first unit suffered a terminal issue in China, preventing Norris from starting the race. A second unit, fitted in Japan, required remedial work after problems in Free Practice, forcing a switch to a third unit within the allowed allocation. Although the second unit was repaired after Japan, it failed again during FP2 in Monaco and was withdrawn.

Norris has been using the third permitted unit since the Miami Grand Prix, but Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains has since introduced upgraded components with reliability fixes and performance gains. To benefit from these improvements, McLaren opted to take a new unit and accept the penalty.

Strategic Timing

McLaren chose to apply the penalty at Spa-Francorchamps, a circuit known for offering overtaking opportunities, rather than at the next two races in Hungary and Zandvoort, where passing is more difficult. The team plans to use the fourth unit for the remainder of the season to maximize reliability and minimize further sporting penalties.

Struggles in 2026 Season

Norris and McLaren have failed to replicate their strong form from the previous two seasons. Their only victory in 2026 came in the Sprint race in Miami in early May, but they could not convert that pace into a win in the main Grand Prix, where Kimi Antonelli held Norris off for the race win. Consistent podium finishes have since been elusive.
