Halifax has issued an update regarding its branch network following the announcement that 48 Halifax branches will close permanently in 2026, part of a broader Lloyds Banking Group plan to shut 79 branches across its brands. Customers are advised to note key dates as closures begin in June.
Customer Inquiry Sparks Clarification
A customer contacted Halifax via social media, referencing an earlier advertisement in which the bank stated it would not close any branches. The customer questioned whether this still held true. Halifax responded: "We're not closing all branches, but some changes have been necessary based on how customers are choosing to bank. If you have any questions, please send us a direct message."
The bank acknowledged that adjustments to its branch network have been driven by evolving customer preferences, with more people using digital banking services.
Lloyds Banking Group Statement on Closures
A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson said: "With access to one of the biggest branch networks in the UK, alongside local banking options like our community bankers, the Post Office, PayPoint, plus our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service, we offer our customers more choice and convenience than ever before."
The group noted that of the 79 branches earmarked for closure, more than three-quarters have another Lloyds Banking Group branch within less than a mile. Over 90% have a branch within five miles. The bank considers branch usage and alternative banking methods when making closure decisions, and it has been contacting customers to inform them of options, including tailored support for vulnerable customers.
