The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed the next six State Pension age increases by birth date, affecting when older people become eligible to claim their State Pension.
The State Pension age in the UK is rising from 66 to 67, with the change taking effect from April 6. The age rise is being implemented gradually in phases over a two-year period, due to complete in 2028. The gradual increase affects anyone born on or after April 6, 1960, and means those with 66th birthdays that fall within the transitional period will reach State Pension age when they are 66 plus a specified number of months.
Phased implementation timetable
Under the DWP timetable, reaching State Pension age becomes further delayed the later your 66th birthday falls, meaning some people will only be a month or two away from turning 67 by the time they can claim their State Pension.
The sixth phase of the DWP timetable for the State Pension age increase will complete on October 5, but there are still another six to go until the rise from 66 to 67 is complete, with the next phase due to get underway this month from October 6.
Next six phases by birth date
Listed are the next six phases of the State Pension age increase in the UK, affecting people with the following birth dates:
- October 6, 1960 – November 5, 1960: reach State Pension age at 66 years and 7 months. If your birthday falls on October 6, 1960, you won't officially reach State Pension age until May 6, 1960 - seven months after you turn 66.
- November 6, 1960 – December 5, 1960: reach State Pension age at 66 years and 8 months. The point at which you become eligible to claim your State Pension will be exactly eight months after your 66th birthday.
- December 6, 1960 – January 5, 1961: reach State Pension age at 66 years and nine months, according to the DWP timetable. If your birthday is on December 6, you'll have to wait until September 9 until you can claim your State Pension.
- January 6, 1961 – February 5, 1961: reach State Pension age at 66 years and 10 months. Those affected will be just two months away from turning 67 by the time they become eligible to claim their State Pension.
- February 6, 1961 – March 5, 1961: reach State Pension age at 66 years and 11 months. This cohort of adults are the last ones to still be aged 66 when they reach State Pension age.
