DVLA Warns UK Drivers: Tax Reminder Takes 5 Minutes

The DVLA has issued a crucial warning to all 42 million drivers in the UK, reminding them that setting up a vehicle tax reminder service takes just five minutes and can prevent costly fines. Road tax, officially known as Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), is a legal requirement for most vehicles on UK roads, and failure to pay can result in penalties ranging from £80 to £2,500.

DVLA Launches Tax Reminder Service

The DVLA has launched a new vehicle tax reminder service to help drivers avoid missing their payment deadlines. The service allows motorists to receive reminders via text message or email, ensuring they never forget to renew their road tax. The DVLA stressed that setting up the service is quick and easy, taking only around five minutes.

In a post on social media platform X, the DVLA stated: "Do you know when your vehicle tax is due? With a Driver and vehicles account, you can choose to receive vehicle tax reminders by text or email! Make life a little easier, it only takes around 5 minutes."

Penalties for Untaxed Vehicles

Drivers who fail to pay their vehicle tax on time automatically receive an £80 fine. However, this penalty can be reduced to £40 if the bill is paid within 28 days of the letter's issue date. Ignoring the fine and continuing to drive an untaxed vehicle can lead to more severe consequences, including a penalty charge of up to £2,500. Additionally, vehicles without valid road tax are at risk of being clamped or impounded.

The DVLA holds records for over 50 million driving licences and around 42 million vehicles on UK roads. The reminder service is designed to prevent motorists from inadvertently breaking the law due to forgetfulness.

Alternative Reminder Methods

In addition to digital reminders, drivers can still receive a physical vehicle tax reminder (V11 letter) by post. GOV.UK explains: "If you pay for your vehicle tax every 6 or 12 months you may also get a reminder to tax your vehicle (V11 letter) by post. You can choose not to get paper reminders when you set up digital reminders in your account."

Even vehicles that are exempt from VED fees, such as classic cars, must still be taxed annually to remain legal on the roads. The DVLA advises all drivers to ensure their vehicle tax is up to date to avoid penalties.
