Blue Badge Holders Warned: 84-Day Application Processing

Millions of disabled motorists across England are being reminded to check their Blue Badge expiry dates, as the Government warns that applications can take up to 12 weeks – 84 days – to be processed by local councils. Applicants are urged to allow plenty of time when applying for or renewing a Blue Badge.

Blue Badge Costs and Duration

A Blue Badge costs up to £10 in England, £20 in Scotland, and is free in Wales. They last up to three years and help people with disabilities or health conditions park closer to their destination. You can apply for a badge for yourself, on behalf of someone else, or for an organisation that transports people needing a Blue Badge.

Rising Number of Blue Badge Holders

As of March 2025, 3.07 million Blue Badges were held in England, an increase of 228,000 (8%) compared to the previous year. This means 5.2% of the population now holds a Blue Badge. Of these, 39% were held by those eligible without further assessment, 60% by those eligible subject to further assessment, and 1% by organisations.

Consequences of Expired Badges

Many holders may not realise that badges do not last forever. They are only valid for three years and must be renewed; they do not automatically extend. Failing to renew can prove costly. Misusing a Blue Badge, whether intentionally or accidentally, can lead to hefty fines. According to the Mirror, using an expired permit could mean a fine of £1,000 for “misusing” the badge.

Official Guidance

According to Gov.uk: “A Blue Badge costs up to £10 in England and £20 in Scotland. It’s free in Wales. They usually last up to 3 years. You must reapply for a Blue Badge before your current one expires.” It added: “How you pay depends on your local council. They’ll usually make a decision within 12 weeks.”

Eligibility and Application Requirements

Some people qualify automatically, such as those receiving certain disability-related benefits or registered as severely sight impaired. Others must provide medical evidence showing significant difficulty walking or serious health conditions affecting mobility or safety. To apply or renew, motorists must submit updated identification, proof of address, supporting medical information where required, and a recent photograph. Councils assess each case individually, and previous approval does not guarantee renewal.

Online Application Checklist

To apply or renew online, you will need: a recent digital photo showing your head and shoulders; proof of identity (such as a passport, driving licence, or birth certificate); proof of address (such as a Council Tax bill or a government letter); proof of benefits (if applicable); National Insurance number (if you have one); and details of your current Blue Badge (if you're reapplying).
