Planning Approval Granted for Barbour House Upgrades

South Tyneside Council's planning department has approved an application for enhancement works at Barbour House, the headquarters of the iconic Tyneside clothing firm Barbour, located on the Bede Industrial Estate. The decision was made on July 8, 2026.

Details of the Proposed Works

The proposals, submitted earlier this year, involve minor external alterations described as "envelope upgrade works to an existing industrial/office unit which has been occupied by J Barbour & Sons Ltd since August 1989." The works include over-skinning the existing profiled metal roof with insulation and installing a new outer metal skin, as well as replacing high-level wall cladding with new composite insulated cladding. Additional works encompass over-skinning and recladding of the projecting entrance bay to the north elevation, where the curtain walling will be replaced with a more energy-efficient system. Ribbon windows on the east and north elevations will also be replaced, along with replacement service entrances on the eastern side and windows and widened emergency exit doors on the west and south elevations.

Infrastructure Improvements

Small-scale kerb realignments are planned around a new goods-in delivery area to improve turning circles for delivery vehicles to Barbour House and the adjacent factory outlet, while maintaining access to the storage area or compound of the neighbouring unit. According to representatives of the development, the re-skinning and re-cladding works will retain the aesthetic of the current premises, with the colour scheme maintaining the long-established Barbour brand.

Significance for the Local Economy

Local authority planners indicated that the application would "allow a significant and long-established major employer in the borough to further extend and consolidate their business operations on the Bede Industrial Estate site." They highlighted that the overriding aim of the scheme was to "create a facility that could be accessed easily and safely by all those wishing to use it." Barbour, established in 1894, has been manufacturing and retailing waxed jackets for over 125 years and holds multiple Royal Warrants, including one from the King, granted in 1987 when he was Prince of Wales.
