St Catherine's Place shopping centre in Bedminster, Bristol, once branded the 'UK's saddest shopping centre' after its closure in 2023, is now undergoing a £10 million transformation into housing and public spaces.
From decline to demolition
The centre originally housed popular retailers including Shoe Zone, The Works and the British Heart Foundation, but by 2020 only three shops remained. In its final year, Farmfoods was the sole trader. After closure, the site fell into disrepair, attracting vandals and graffiti, becoming an eyesore for the community.
Redevelopment plans
Work began shortly after closure, uncovering the 170-year-old foundations of Bedminster Mill, featured on BBC's Digging for Britain. The five plots will see mixed-use development, including new homes, enhanced public spaces and restoration of the River Malago. The project is part of the wider Bedminster Green regeneration scheme.
Planning permission has been granted for 180 flats. The first homes went on sale in late 2025, with one-bedroom flats priced around £190,000. A spokesperson for developer Firmstone Developments said: 'St Catherine's Place will play a key role in the regeneration of East Street, Bedminster. We have a vision to revitalise this neglected part of Bedminster by building new homes, creating vibrant new public spaces and frontages, and promoting a more positive future for the local residents.'
Community impact
The redevelopment aims to bring the community closer together and give the site a new lease of life, replacing the derelict centre with modern amenities and housing.
