Manchester United have cancelled their £35 million deal with Atalanta to sign Brazilian midfielder Ederson, according to Sky Sport Italy. The 25-year-old failed his medical on Friday, prompting United to inform the Serie A club that they will not proceed with the transfer.
Medical reveals concerns
United initially agreed a £35m fee with Atalanta in June, but delayed the full medical examination until after Brazil's World Cup campaign. The medical reportedly uncovered issues that led to the club's decision to pull out of the deal.
The cancellation comes as a surprise, as Ederson had been a key target for United's midfield reinforcement this summer. The Brazilian international made 36 appearances for Atalanta last season, scoring 6 goals and providing 3 assists.
Impact on United's transfer plans
United are now expected to explore alternative midfield options before the transfer window closes. The club had already been linked with other targets, including Paris Saint-Germain's Manuel Ugarte and Benfica's João Neves. Manager Erik ten Hag will be keen to strengthen his squad after a disappointing Premier League campaign last season.
Atalanta, meanwhile, will now have to find a new buyer for Ederson or retain the player. The Italian club had been preparing for his departure and may need to adjust their own transfer plans.
