Killarney's 'Crazy Cat Lady' Faces Eviction Over 30 Cats

Collette Boler, known locally as the 'crazy cat lady', has been banned from feeding a colony of feral cats in Thurnscoe, near Barnsley, after a neighbouring business complained about cat faeces. The grandmother of seven had cared for the cats for 20 years, visiting twice daily and spending her own money on vet bills and neutering.

Barnsley Council issued a warning that if she continues feeding the cats, she could face a community protection notice and a fine of up to £2,500. The council acknowledged her 'good intentions' but said the warning was 'an early step to prevent the situation from getting worse'.

However, Boler has received overwhelming support from animal lovers across the country. Strangers have donated food and money, and the Cat Action Trust 1977 has written to the council urging it to repeal the ban. The charity's volunteer, Alice Ostapjuk-Wise, said: 'Feeders like Collette play a really important role' in controlling feral cat populations.

Boler's daughter, Rebecca Foster, expressed concern that the ban has led to uncontrolled feeding by multiple people, which could worsen the situation. 'No one even knew about these cats two weeks ago, and now they're the most famous cats in South Yorkshire,' she said.

Boler, who has adopted one of the cats and found homes for others, said she just wants to be allowed to continue her work. 'I just wish they'd let me feed my cats. That's all I want. That's all I've ever wanted.'
