Garnacho's Chelsea Crisis: Team-mates, Alonso Decision

Alejandro Garnacho's Chelsea career is at another crossroads less than a year after his £40million move from Manchester United. The Argentine winger, who joined near the end of the summer transfer window, now faces an uncertain future as new manager Xabi Alonso has already decided to move him on.

Struggles at Stamford Bridge

Garnacho's transfer from Manchester United was seen as a potential bargain, but it has become another expensive mistake for Chelsea. The Blues have failed to get the best out of the 22-year-old, though not all blame lies with him. The manager who signed him, Enzo Maresca, left mid-season to join Manchester City. His replacement, Liam Rosenior, lasted just 106 days before being sacked as Chelsea's season turned farcical.

Behaviour and Early Promise

Initially, Garnacho impressed at Chelsea. In September 2025, Maresca said: "He's working well. For sure he needs to work because he arrived here probably not 100 per cent fit. So he needs to work. He's working well and we'll see. But hopefully soon we can give him minutes." Garnacho himself stated: "I have a winning mentality. I have passion and a big personality. It's a natural fit with a club like Chelsea." The honeymoon period did not last.

Team-mates' Criticism

Garnacho's performance against his former club Manchester United in April drew sharp criticism. Coming off the bench early for the injured Estevao, he made little impact as Chelsea lost 1-0 to a Matheus Cunha goal. According to The Sun, some team-mates berated him at half-time. Matters worsened when Luke Shaw shared a photo of his robust challenge on Garnacho, liked or commented on by Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes, Cunha, Joshua Zirkzee, Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Martinez, Patrick Dorgu, and Mason Mount.

Alonso's Decision

New Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso has told Garnacho he is not guaranteed a regular starting place, and the club is willing to listen to offers of around £43m. In his first press conference, Alonso said: "We have spoken with the sports directors, and there is an interest from him from other clubs, so let's see how it develops." Clubs in the Premier League, Italy, and Saudi Arabia are reportedly interested. Internally, Chelsea hopes to finalise a deal this month before the Premier League opener at Fulham on August 24.
