Andy Burnham's Departure Won't Impact Man Utd's New 100,000-Seat Stadium Plans
Burnham Exit Won't Affect Man Utd Stadium Plans

Manchester United have confirmed that their plans for a new 100,000-seat stadium will not be affected by Andy Burnham's departure as Greater Manchester mayor. Burnham, who was appointed as the Member of Parliament for Makerfield last week, is now the frontrunner to succeed Keir Starmer as Prime Minister after Starmer announced his resignation on Monday morning.

Stadium Project Secured by Mayoral Development Corporation

United sources have stated that the Old Trafford regeneration project is covered by the Mayoral Development Corporation, which was established by parliament and can only be reversed by the government. This means that even if Burnham's replacement as mayor comes from a different political party, the stadium work already underway cannot be undone.

Burnham has been heavily involved in the plans, which include a new stadium and wider regeneration of the area. He previously emphasised that Manchester United will fund the stadium itself, with no public money going into the construction. However, the public sector has a role in improving the surrounding infrastructure, such as relocating a disused train station behind the stand to benefit local communities like Gorse Hill and Stretford.

Economic Benefits and Land Negotiations

Burnham has highlighted the economic benefits of the project, stating: "Thousands of new homes, thousands of new jobs, so it's much wider than the ground itself." He also noted that the public benefit would be "massive" due to the reopening of the station and improved connectivity.

United have confirmed that work on the stadium is ongoing, but the key to advancing the 100,000-seater plan is reaching a deal with Freightliner, which owns the land behind Old Trafford. Reports last summer valued the land at £350 million, but Burnham played down that figure, suggesting compulsory purchase powers could be used if necessary.

The club's confidence that the project will proceed regardless of political changes underscores the robust legal framework in place, ensuring that the regeneration of Old Trafford remains on track.
