Chesham and Amersham in Buckinghamshire has been named the top retirement destination in Britain, according to a new index from Legal & General (L&G). The area, known for its convenient transport links to London, historic streets, and proximity to the Chilterns, scored highest overall.
The index evaluated areas against six pillars: housing, health, social and community, financial, nature, and amenities. Chesham and Amersham excelled in health measures, with a high proportion of over-65s reporting good physical and mental well-being. It also scored well for financial security, access to nature, and community engagement.
Mid Dunbartonshire and Monmouthshire were named the best retirement locations in Scotland and Wales, respectively. The analysis used data from the Office for National Statistics, census data, housing reports, and a survey of 3,000 UK retirees conducted by Opinium in April 2024.
Lorna Shah, managing director for retail retirement at L&G, said: “This research gives us a more complete picture of what shapes a happy later life. It’s not just about one factor – it’s the combination of health, social connections, environment, and financial security.”
The south west of England performed well for housing, with Bristol Central, Gloucester, and Bournemouth East noted for suitable senior housing. Lancashire's Fylde area topped the social and community pillar, while Castle Point in Essex led the nature category. London constituencies dominated the amenities pillar.
