Guest Shocked by Value of 50p Plate
A guest on the BBC show Antiques Roadshow was left stunned after learning that a damaged plate she had purchased for just 50 pence was worth hundreds of pounds. The woman brought the blue and white plate to the show’s valuation experts, unaware of its true age or value.
Plate Dated to 1760
The plate, bought from a car boot sale, was examined by expert Henry Sandon, who determined it dated from around 1760. It was likely made in either Bristol or Liverpool, according to Sandon. The guest, who worked in the gift shop at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, had collected several blue and white plates, paying about £1 for most but only 50p for this particular piece.
Valuation Revealed
“This little chappie, who was 50p, is actually about 1760 in date,” Sandon told her. “And instead of being just a couple of odd quid, your 50p is now worth £800.” The guest exclaimed, “Oh my goodness!” and asked, “Even in that condition?” Sandon acknowledged the plate was slightly damaged but quipped, “You're entitled to be damaged after 250 years. I'm a little damaged after this!”
