From April 2027, cars manufactured in 1987 will qualify as historic vehicles under UK government rules, granting them exemption from annual road tax and mandatory MoT tests. This rolling 40-year rule, which advances each April, is breathing new life into iconic 1980s models that once starred in television and film, such as the Mercedes-Benz SL driven by Michael Brandon in Dempsey & Makepeace and the Ferrari 328 driven by Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop.
What Changes for Historic Vehicles?
Once a car reaches 40 years old, it automatically qualifies as a historic vehicle. Owners can apply to the DVSA for an exemption certificate. Benefits include zero road tax, no requirement for an annual MoT, and exemption from the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charge in London, which can save up to £3,250 annually. However, the Congestion Charge still applies. According to Graeme Hunt, a classic car specialist based in Battersea, south-west London, “People hate paying £12.50 a day to drive around the capital. It’s a heavy fiscal burden and an imposition. So this helps sustain interest in collectable 1980s cars.”
Why 1980s Cars Are Ideal Modern Classics
Unlike earlier classics, most 1980s cars were well-built with improved rust-proofing, power steering, automatic transmissions, and reliable brakes. They also predate the complex electronics of modern vehicles, making them easier to maintain. Graeme Hunt explains: “ECUs [electronic control units] are in all modern cars from the early 2000s. When they’re no longer viable, they need to be rebuilt at a cost of £1,200 each. But a 40-year old car usually doesn’t have any ECUs and, therefore, its electrics aren’t fallible in the same way.”
Popular Models and Market Appeal
Andrew Speer, founder of ulezclassic.co.uk, notes that 1980s cars “sit in that sweet spot where they’re old enough to feel special, modern enough to use, and not so valuable that you’d be scared to park them on the street.” He recommends the VW Golf GTI 16V, Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9, Saab 900 convertible, and BMW E30 325i convertible for 2027. Auctioneer Matthew Priddy of Historics adds: “The 1980s is where nostalgia meets common sense. Cars of this era have all the character of a true classic, but are modern enough to drive and enjoy without compromise.”
Cost Savings and Insurance
A new Mercedes SL can cost between £110,000 and £200,000, while a well-maintained 40-year-old version can be bought for around £18,000. Historic vehicle status also allows classic car insurance, which often lowers premiums. Mark Roper, managing director of Hagerty UK, says: “We value a policy no differently if a vehicle has an exemption from an MoT. All clients are asked to confirm roadworthiness when a policy is sought.”
MoT Recommendations and Legal Requirements
Although MoT is not mandatory for historic vehicles, experts strongly advise having one. Graeme Hunt recommends: “I recommend owners do have their annual MoT because it keeps an eye on your car’s fuel lines, brakes lines, structural rigidity and so on.” Cars that have been modified beyond original specification still require an MoT. The fine for driving an unroadworthy vehicle can reach £2,500.
