New research has uncovered the interior design choices that are causing UK holiday rental hosts to lose valuable bookings, with potential guests forming judgements in a matter of seconds.
The Snap Judgement of Holidaymakers
A survey of 2,000 British travellers, commissioned by Booking.com, reveals that first impressions are crucial. More than a quarter of holidaymakers decide if a property is for them in under ten seconds. In fact, a significant 43% believe they make their accommodation choice faster than it takes to brew a cup of tea.
The study highlights specific décor elements that act as major deterrents. In the kitchen, damaged cabinet doors, beaded curtains, and fridge doors covered in magnets are immediate red flags. Bedrooms become less appealing if they feature dolls or mannequins, a turn-off for 52% of respondents. In the bathroom, the ultimate deal-breaker is a fluffy toilet seat cover.
Top Turn-Offs Inside and Out
When it comes to the living area, certain styles are particularly unpopular. The research compiled a definitive list of the top ten décor choices that put potential renters off.
TOP 10 LIVING ROOM DÉCOR CHOICES THAT PUT OFF POTENTIAL HOLIDAY RENTERS:
- Taxidermy or animal heads
- Excessive knick-knacks and ornaments (viewed as dust collectors)
- Excessive wall clutter like lots of plaques, signs, or random frames
- 80s or 90s-style carpets with busy geometric or floral prints
- Glittery or diamante cushions and accessories
- Fake houseplants
- Heavy drapes or dark, dated curtains
- Chintzy lace curtains
- Wall decals or removable stickers
- 'Live, laugh, love' style artwork
Outdoor spaces are equally important. An untidy garden would deter 61% of guests, while 41% are put off by a lack of greenery or an excess of concrete. Other garden grievances include excessive plastic plants or fake topiary (38%) and old BBQ equipment left out (35%).
Creating a Bookable Holiday Home
Amy Durn, interior design partner for Booking.com, commented on the findings, stating, "Travellers today are looking for homestays with personality, but the key is balance. You don't need the whole house to be dramatic, just one element that lodges in a guest's mind. It should be memorable for the right reasons."
The research also identified what guests find appealing. Premium bedding and handy charging sockets significantly enhance a bedroom's appeal. Outside, an elegant al fresco dining space would attract 52% of holidaymakers, and 37% would be tempted by a hot tub.
Interestingly, the data from OnePoll.com shows that nearly two-thirds (63%) of Brits have never considered renting their own homes because they don't believe their property is 'renter ready'. Furthermore, one in five (22%) feel ashamed of their current home décor.
Amy Durn offers reassuring advice for potential hosts: "You don't need a full renovation to turn a home into a desirable holiday rental. A few intentional design choices can completely change how a space feels and photographs. Guests form an opinion within seconds, and small styling upgrades often have a bigger impact on bookings than big, expensive changes. It's about presenting a home that feels cared for, cohesive, and easy to imagine staying in."
