Manchester City have completed their third signing of the summer transfer window, bringing goalkeeper Pierce Charles back to the Etihad Stadium from Sheffield Wednesday in a deal worth an initial £3m that could rise to £10m with add-ons. The 20-year-old has signed a five-year contract but will spend the 2026-27 season on loan at Championship side Queens Park Rangers.
Return to Manchester City
Charles, who began his career at City alongside his older brother Shea, left the club at age 16 to join Sheffield Wednesday. Over the past two seasons, he broke into the Owls' first team, making 19 appearances during a turbulent period for the club both on and off the pitch. City monitored his progress closely and moved to bring him back.
"To be back at Manchester City is a very special and proud moment both for me and my family," Charles said. "I know first-hand what a special club City is and I am so excited about looking to the future."
Loan to QPR
Despite signing a long-term deal, Charles will gain first-team experience in the Championship with Queens Park Rangers. The loan is designed to aid his development, with the club emphasizing their commitment to nurturing young talent.
"City take the development of young players very seriously so I know that my loan to QPR will only help me grow and improve as a player too," Charles added. "I'll now give everything I can for a successful season in the Championship before hopefully returning to Manchester a better goalkeeper."
Club's Perspective
Director of football Hugo Viana expressed delight at securing Charles's return. "Pierce is someone whose progress we have been following closely, and we are delighted to welcome him back to Manchester City," Viana said. "Pierce has already learned a lot during his time at Sheffield Wednesday but is still very young and hungry to now further progress and develop. He also knows the club and is very much aligned with the values we all share. We are very happy to have secured Pierce's signing and are excited to now help in his future career development."
The deal includes performance-related add-ons tied to City's future success, potentially increasing the fee to £10m. Charles becomes City's third summer signing, following earlier acquisitions.
