P&O Cruises Passengers Must Bring Travel Insurance or Be Denied Boarding
P&O Cruises: Travel Insurance Mandatory or Denied Boarding

P&O Cruises has issued a clear warning to all passengers: without proof of cruise travel insurance, boarding will be refused. The cruise operator states that this requirement is mandatory for every guest, regardless of the ship or itinerary. Passengers who cannot provide evidence of suitable cover will be denied boarding at their own expense, potentially losing the cost of their holiday.

Mandatory Insurance Requirement

On its official website, P&O Cruises explains: "We're delighted that you've chosen to set sail with us, and we cannot wait to welcome you on board. Before we get there, it is mandatory for all guests to have suitable cruise travel insurance cover in order to sail with us." The company emphasises that it is the passenger's responsibility to arrange appropriate cover for the entire duration of the trip.

The cruise line adds: "Unfortunately, you will be denied boarding, at your own expense, if you're unable to confirm you have arranged insurance." Passengers may be asked for proof, either a printed or digital copy of their insurance documentation confirming cover for the named travellers over the travel dates.

Why Cruise Travel Insurance Is Essential

P&O Cruises highlights that standard travel insurance may not be sufficient for a cruise holiday. The operator states: "For many significant purchases in your life, insurance is essential. And holidays are no different. Travel insurance ensures you can relax and enjoy your holiday with peace of mind that you're covered in the event something should go wrong. This includes unforeseen incidents before your holiday, while travelling or while you're away."

The company provides a checklist for selecting appropriate cruise insurance: ensure it covers a cruise holiday, covers the full length of the trip, includes all destinations (worldwide cover if unsure), includes medical and repatriation cover of at least £2 million, and declares any pre-existing medical conditions. Adequate cancellation cover is also recommended.

Fleet and Passenger Guidance

P&O Cruises operates a fleet of seven ships, including family-friendly vessels such as Arvia, Iona, Britannia, Azura, and Ventura, as well as adult-only ships Arcadia and Aurora. All passengers, regardless of the ship, must comply with the insurance requirement.

The cruise line warns that failing to declare pre-existing medical conditions can lead to being uninsured. "You run the risk of not being fully covered and having to pay for medical treatment which can be extremely costly. Emergency medical treatment can even be refused if you do not have the correct insurance, this includes failing to declare pre-existing conditions," the company states.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

If a passenger cancels their holiday, the cancellation policy in the Booking Conditions applies. For cancellations due to a medical reason, provided the condition was declared, the insurer should refund monies paid less the policy excess, according to P&O Cruises.
