Highway Code Rule at 5pm Could Invalidate Car Insurance

Drivers are being reminded of a Highway Code rule that becomes particularly important during the dark winter evenings. With the sun setting at 4.41pm today, January 27, darkness will fall across the UK around 5pm, making it harder to see on the roads.

According to Rule 248 of the Highway Code, motorists must not park on a road at night facing against the direction of traffic flow unless in a recognised parking space. Breaking this rule could result in a fine of up to £1,000 for cars and up to £2,500 for goods vehicles or minibuses, enforceable by both police and local councils.

The rule is designed for safety, as rear reflectors on cars are intended to catch the headlights of approaching vehicles. Parking in the opposite direction eliminates this signal, creating a hazard, especially in poorly lit areas. Even if the mistake is innocent, ignorance is no excuse.

Insurance expert Alicia Hempsted from MoneySupermarket warned that if you are involved in an accident as a result of breaking this rule, your car insurance may not cover you. Insurers could deem you at fault for creating a hazard, potentially leading to rejected claims or a voided policy.

Drivers are advised to always park in the direction of traffic to avoid obstructing flow and ensure safety. This habit can prevent fines and insurance complications, particularly during the darker months.
